Where to Start

Start with the part, not the booth

Booth size is set by the largest part you will finish, plus the room a painter needs to work around it, plus the space the air needs to move past it. Sizing to the part alone is the most common mistake we see, and it is expensive to correct later, because the enclosure, the airflow, and the heat are all sized together.

Write these six things down before you ask anyone for a quote. They are also the fastest way to get a number that means something.

The Fundamentals

What a proper paint booth gets right

Six things decide whether a booth produces a clean finish and keeps producing it. Two booths can look identical on a quote sheet and differ on every one of them.

Airflow, calculated rather than assumed

Airflow carries overspray away from the part and out of the painter's breathing zone, and it has to be adequate and maintained the whole time spraying happens. Ask any supplier to show the calculation, and ask what the airflow will be when the filters are loaded, not only when they are new.

Heat, and whether you need cure or dry-off

There is a real difference between tempering incoming air and running a bake cycle. A system sized only to temper air will not deliver a cure, and a system designed to bake is a larger specification with additional controls. Where a genuine cure is involved, NFPA 86 comes into play. Settle which one you need before comparing heater prices.

Filtration sized for the coating

Both intake and exhaust filters load up over time, and both change the airflow as they do. What matters is filter area, the right grade for your coating, how easy the change is, and how you will know when it is due. Filters are the cheapest thing to neglect and the most reliable cause of a finish problem blamed on something else.

Light you can inspect a finish under

A painter cannot correct what they cannot see. Too few fixtures, or fixtures in the wrong places, produce rework that never shows up in the purchase price. Look at count and placement, colour temperature, and whether light actually reaches the lower half of a large part, which is where weak booths go dark.

Pressure balance and make-up air

A booth exhausting air out of your building has to get that air back from somewhere. Without make-up air designed in, it pulls air under doors and through gaps, dragging dust with it and pulling heat out of the shop in winter. A balanced booth holds slight positive pressure so leakage moves outward.

Controls and the safety chain

Interlocks that prevent spraying without ventilation, a defined sequence for spray and dry cycles, and safety controls on gas fired equipment are part of the equipment, not extras. A panel is harder to compare across quotes than sheet metal, which is exactly why it is worth comparing.

Beyond the Basics

What makes a paint booth a smart one

A proper booth does the job. A smart booth tells you how it is doing it, and costs less to run while doing it. Most of this is difficult to retrofit, so it is worth specifying at purchase.

Airflow monitoring

Filter loading shows up as a reading instead of as a finish defect.

Variable frequency drives

One booth runs correctly at more than one condition, and uses less energy at part load.

Cycle control

Spray, flash, and bake repeat the same way across shifts and operators.

Recorded temperature data

Matters the moment a customer asks you to prove a cure.

Heat recovery

Where process and code allow it. Exhausting heated air is the largest running cost in most booths.

Codes & Compliance

Compliance is built in, not added afterwards

NFPA 33 is the standard most often cited for spray application of flammable and combustible materials. NFPA 86 applies where an oven or cure process is involved. OSHA covers the workplace side, and local building, fire, mechanical, electrical, and air quality authorities apply their own rules on top.

Our systems are ETL Listed by Intertek and built to NFPA 33 and NFPA 86 standards, and we supply engineered drawings, airflow and ventilation calculations, and electrical documentation for submittal. That is designed to make plan review straightforward, though the final determination always rests with your authority having jurisdiction. Ask them what they enforce before equipment is ordered, not after it arrives.

How much does a paint booth cost?

There is no list price, and a supplier who gives you one without questions is quoting a different booth than the one you need. Cost is driven by size, heat, airflow, controls, indoor or outdoor construction, and the compliance work for your jurisdiction. What size paint booth do I need?

Start with the largest part you will finish, add working clearance on every side the painter has to reach, then allow the space the airflow needs to move past the part. How the part enters matters just as much, because a roll-in booth, a drive-in booth, a crane load, and a conveyor line each need different openings and different structure.

How long does it take to build a paint booth?

Build time is typically 6 to 16 weeks depending on the product and the scope, plus freight. We confirm your exact timeline with the quote rather than estimating it here, because a standard bench booth and a conveyorized line are not the same project.

Do I need a permit for a paint booth?

In almost every case, yes. Spray finishing is regulated, and building, fire, mechanical, electrical, and air quality authorities may all be involved depending on your site and your coatings. Which code editions and amendments apply is decided by your authority having jurisdiction, so identify them early. Listed equipment and engineered drawings shorten that review but do not replace it.

What is the difference between a paint booth and a spray booth?

In practice the two terms describe the same equipment. Spray booth is the language the standards use, while paint booth is what most shops call it day to day. Either way it means an enclosure with mechanical ventilation, filtration, lighting, and controls built for spray application.

Can a paint booth be installed outdoors?

Yes. An outdoor booth is built for weather and set on a pad, which frees interior floor space and can simplify the building side of a project. It brings its own considerations for insulation, heating, and site work, and the comparison depends on your climate and your building. What does ETL Listed mean for a paint booth?

It means the equipment has been evaluated against applicable standards by a recognized testing laboratory, so an inspector has one mark to work from instead of a pile of component paperwork. California Pulse offers full system ETL listings by Intertek on applicable product lines. It does not remove the local review: your authority having jurisdiction still assesses how the equipment is installed.

Do you build custom sizes, or only standard models?

Custom. Every booth, oven, and heater is engineered around what you finish, the space you have, and the power available at your building. Standard sizes exist and are often the right answer, but they are a starting point rather than the whole catalogue.
